These are the rules of the game as they apply to the Hot Shots Curling Club.
Canadian Curling Association rules will apply, with the following exceptions…
Games consist of 8 ends maximum, or, when the buzzer goes, finish the end in play and play one more end. An end is complete when a score is determined (CCA Rule 2. (6)). The last full end completed determines the score, with tie games allowed.
Teams MUST have a minimum of 1 REGULAR curler, or the game is forfeited!
Teams must be on the ice no later than 7:30 PM, with a minimum of 3 players. If both teams default, one point is scored.
Spare Rules
Subject to Team approval (i.e. the Team requiring a Spare), at any given time, Spares MAY be allowed to play Lead or Second position. However, where a Skip will be away for 3 or more weeks, a Spare MAY be allowed to play as high as Third and the Third must move to the Skip position. Where the Third will be away for 3 or more weeks, a Spare MAY be allowed to play as high as Third. In the case of 2 Spares, they will play Lead and Second positions. In the case of 3 Spares, the regular curler MUST assume the Skip position. Again, all positioning of Spares, with the exception of where 3 Spares are required, will be subject to team approval. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE notify the Spare Captain AS SOON AS POSSIBLE and no later than Tuesday should you require a Spare. The Spare Captain will make every effort to find you a Spare, but needs as much lead time as possible!!
Scoring
Scoring is as follows:
- WIN – 3 Points
- TIE – 2 Points
- LOSS – 1 Point
- BYE – 0 Points
Winning Thirds are expected to mark the game results on the Standings Board after your game. Order of finish for overall results will be determined as follows:
- If tied, seasonal play between tied teams (i.e. Win/Loss record against each other)
- If still tied, record against the next highest team
- If still tied, Skips will throw 1 rock each, closest to the button, with sweeping allowed
The Hot Shots Curling Club is not responsible for any lost or stolen articles or injuries. If you have any questions concerning the Club Rules or disputes during games, first attempt to resolve it between the teams involved, then consult the President or any member of the Executive.
Free Gaurd Rule
September 2018 – 5 Rock free guard rule adopted.
Late Rule
The following is clarification of the rule, regarding late or postponement of a game, according to the Canadian Curling Association.
If a team does not commence play at the designated time:
For each full 5 minutes that the offending team does not commence play, the non-offending team shall be granted 1 point and 1 end shall be considered to have been played, and this is not considered poor sportsmanship to count the point.
If the non-offending team has been granted a point(s), the non-offending team shall be given the choice of last rock in the first end or color of handle.
After 30 minutes has elapsed, the non-offending team shall be declared the winner.
Speed of Play
Suggestions to players to speed up play:
If the ice is cleaned, pebbled and nipped earlier than the designated draw start time, if the ice staff or office staff allow it – start early or at least be on the sheet ready to throw at the appointed draw time. Immediately following the skip throwing the last stone – skips should head to the house for the start of the next end.
Seconds and Thirds are responsible to remove the rocks from the house and place them in order for their respective teams.
Leads should be getting their stones ready to throw whether they are throwing the first or second stone for the end.
Front end should get the skip’s rock ready (in front of hack) while the skip and third are discussing the shot.
Next player should be in the hack, with their rock cleaned as soon as their opponent has released their stone.
In the event that a measure is required, the team that did not count the end should be responsible to carry the measure stick back to the holding rack.
Special Rules for Scoring during Play-off
All games maximum of 8 ends, or to Buzzer as normal – PLEASE, NO SLOW PLAY!!!
If tied, Skips throw one rock, closest to the button wins. Sweeping is allowed by the throwing team only.
- Record points “For & Against” for each game played. (points will be used to break ties)
- 2 points are awarded for each game won. Teams tied after round robin play will be decided as follows:
- Record against the team(s) your tied with.
- Record against the 2nd place team.
- Total “net” points For & Against. (i.e. total points scored minus total points given up)
